Bacchanalian Relief

Wine and dancing carved onto the steps of a Buddhist stupa.

What

Three schist panels of figures between columns: musicians in conical caps play and dance while others drink and carry wine.

Why

Carved around AD 100 as stair risers for a Buddhist monument in the Buner area of Gandhara; the Cleveland Museum of Art holds them (1930.328), CC0.

Notice

Cleveland’s record reads the capped figures as Phrygians and the drinkers as Greek.

“The bacchanal travelled as far as the roads did.”
