The Bateman Amphora
Four satyrs dancing around Dionysos on a black-figure wine jar.
What
A black-figure amphora: on one panel four dancing satyrs surround Dionysos, on the other four soldiers stride over a fallen warrior.
Why
Made in Athens around 530 to 520 BC; it gave its name to the Bateman Group after its former owner, John Bateman. Cleveland holds it (1927.433), CC0.
Notice
The satyrs’ silhouettes are black on orange, the oldest way to paint a party.
“War on one side of the jar and wine on the other.”
