The Cubiculum at Boscoreale

A wall of a Roman villa buried by Vesuvius — painted architecture opening onto painted air.

What

A fresco wall from Room H of the Villa of P. Fannius Synistor at Boscoreale, buried by the eruption of 79 AD and recovered whole.

Why

A faithful reproduction of a public-domain work in The Metropolitan Museum (CC0) — a genuine Roman wall, the same age and world as the Villa of the Mysteries frieze.

Notice

The entire room is an illusion: columns, gates and vistas painted onto a flat wall.

“The Romans painted the view they wished they had.”
