Divan Japonais

The café-concert in black and gold — the whole late night in one silhouette.

What

Lautrec’s poster for the Divan Japonais at 75 rue des Martyrs: a woman in a sweeping black gown at the café-concert, the critic Édouard Dujardin beside her, the orchestra’s neck of a double bass cutting up from below.

Why

The single most elegant thing lithography ever did for nightlife — the poster that hung the door of a Montmartre cabaret. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain lithograph at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Notice

The whole figure is one flat black shape; the drama is entirely in the gold chair and the yellow gloves it against.

“The poster promised the evening before you were through the door.”
