Reine de Joie

The supper scene, wine on the table — scandal sold as a book, painted as a poster.

What

Lautrec’s poster for the novel Reine de Joie: a courtesan leaning to kiss a stout old banker across a supper table, a wine glass and the round of a bottle set out plainly on the cloth in front of them.

Why

A book advertisement that made the whole of Paris blush — the decadent supper as its own genre, wine and all. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain lithograph at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Notice

The wine glass sits at the exact centre foot of the poster — the still, sober object under all the scandal.

“Every age has a supper it pretends not to have attended.”
