Infant Bacchanal

A revel of putti in grisaille — the party handed down to the very young.

What

A bacchanal staffed entirely by putti — a grisaille frieze of infants playing at the wine-god’s rites, panel-mate to the Triumph.

Why

The Rococo loved to shrink its gods to cherubs; the revel becomes decoration, still unmistakably the revel. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain painting at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Notice

Even the smallest reveler carries the vine — the emblem outlasts the scale.

“The appetite is inherited early.”
