Violin Player with a Wine Glass
A musician with a glass raised and a broken-toothed grin.
What
A half-length musician in a plumed cap holds up a wine glass with his violin under his arm, grinning straight out.
Why
Baburen, one of the first to bring Caravaggio’s style to the Netherlands, painted it in 1623; the Cleveland Museum of Art holds it (2018.25), CC0.
Notice
Cleveland’s record points to the broken tooth in the grin.
“The musician at the edge of the party is the one enjoying it most.”
