Peasants Drinking About

A tavern table at the stage where nobody is sitting up straight.

What

Peasants crowd a table in a brown inn: one sleeps on his arm, another raises a glass, a woman sprawls at the front with her red skirt.

Why

Painted by Adriaen Brouwer around 1625; the Rijksmuseum (SK-A-64) lends it to the Mauritshuis, The Hague (inventory 847).

Notice

The stoneware jug on the floor at left stands upright while every drinker slumps.

“Brouwer painted the hour after the good hour.”
