The Bitter Potion
The face of a man who has just drunk the wrong thing.
What
A young man in a cap screws up his eyes and opens his mouth, a glass in one hand and a small cup in the other.
Why
Brouwer painted it in his last years; it is in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inventory 1076).
Notice
Even the hand on his chest is reacting.
“Not every glass is a pleasure, and Brouwer painted the other kind.”
