As the Old Sang, the Young Play Pipes

Three generations at one table, and every one of them singing.

What

A family at a laid table: the grandmother reads the song from a sheet, the grandfather sings, a boy and a man blow pipes, and the mother holds the baby.

Why

Jordaens painted the Flemish proverb in 1638; the canvas has hung in Antwerp since the museum acquired it in 1883 (KMSKA 677).

Notice

The pipes in the children’s mouths answer the song in the old woman’s hand: the lesson passes down the table.

“A house teaches its habits at supper, one verse at a time.”
