The Irish and American Bar, Rue Royale

A Paris bar, the barman at work, the regulars in top hats.

What

A colour lithograph: the barman mixes at the counter while two men in top hats lean in, a vase of flowers at the left.

Why

Lautrec drew the Rue Royale bar in 1896; the Cleveland Museum of Art holds this lithograph (1925.1201), CC0.

Notice

The dark blue band across the top is the bar’s awning, cut off by the frame.

“Lautrec drank where he drew, and drew where he drank.”
