The Jolly Toper

A red plume, a tilted jug and a grin aimed straight at you.

What

A man in a feathered cap tips an empty stoneware jug toward the viewer, a pipe and tobacco on the table in front of him.

Why

Judith Leyster painted it in 1629; it belongs to the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam (SK-A-1685), CC0.

Notice

The jug is turned over to show it is empty: his glass needs filling.

“Leyster gave Haarlem’s drinkers a painter of their own rank.”
