The Twelfth Night Feast

A child crowned king for the night, and a man drinking from the jug.

What

A family table on Twelfth Night: a crowned child is lifted up, a man drinks straight from a long jug, and the women laugh behind.

Why

Painted by Jan Steen; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, holds it (BF.1978.21).

Notice

The jug is tipped so far that the drinker’s face disappears behind it.

“On Epiphany night the youngest gets the crown and the oldest gets the jug.”
