Tavern Scene

Cards on the barrel, a jug on the floor, a dog asleep.

What

Two men play cards on an upturned barrel while others watch, a jug stands on the floor and a dog curls at the right.

Why

Teniers painted it on panel in 1658; the National Gallery of Art, Washington, holds it (1975.77.1) and releases it CC0.

Notice

The man relieving himself in the back corner is the joke Teniers hid behind the card game.

“In Teniers, the tavern is a stage with good manners.”
