Still Life with Fruit and Wine Jug

A dark goblet glowing behind the fruit — Monticelli painting with a loaded brush.

What

Monticelli’s heaped table in thick, jewelled impasto — pears and an orange, a white jug, and behind them a dark wine goblet catching what little light there is.

Why

The bridge between the old still life and the Impressionists: the subject barely matters, the paint is the feast. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain painting at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Notice

The goblet is built from a dozen loaded strokes — closer to jewellery than to glass.

“Sometimes the wine is an excuse for the colour.”
