Grapes, Lemons, Pears, and Apples

Van Gogh’s grapes in a storm of colour — wine at the fruit, before the press.

What

Van Gogh’s heaped grapes — purple and pale green — with lemons, pears and apples, the whole table churning on a ground of blue and violet strokes.

Why

Painted in Paris the year the palette caught fire; the grape gets the same electric treatment as any of his skies. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain painting at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Notice

The tablecloth is painted in as many colours as the fruit — nothing here is allowed to sit still.

“Everything in the glass begins as something this alive.”
