Merrymakers in an Inn

The fiddle strikes up, the jug is on the floor, and the whole inn is on its feet.

What

Adriaen van Ostade’s Dutch inn at full tilt — a fiddler sawing, a couple hauled up to dance, the stoneware jug set down on the boards where it will be reached for again.

Why

The tavern is where wine stopped being a sacrament and became a Saturday night. A faithful reproduction of a public-domain painting at The Art Institute of Chicago.

Notice

The jug is painted dead centre on the floor — the still point the whole dance orbits.

“The oldest use of the cellar: to get the room up and moving.”
