Bacchanal with Silenus (Brescia)

Mantegna’s revel re-cut for a sharper print.

What

The crowned Silenus carried by his companions, the same frieze as Mantegna’s, printed darker and crisper.

Why

Mantegna had Giovanni Antonio da Brescia re-engrave several of his plates; Cleveland holds this impression (1924.515), CC0.

Notice

Hang it beside Mantegna’s own and the lines here read deeper and blacker.

“A great image was worth cutting twice.”
