Bacchanalia

Silenus held up by satyrs in the dark of the grove.

What

A heavy, drink-slackened Silenus leans on the satyrs around him while a satyr mother nurses her young in the foreground.

Why

Rubens painted it around 1615; it belongs to the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, Moscow.

Notice

The light falls on bodies only; the grove around them is near black.

“The wine-god’s company carries its own lantern: its own skin.”
