The Andrians

Rubens takes up Titian’s island revel and turns the heat higher.

What

The Andrians drink and tumble beneath tall trees, a glass held up against the clouds and a sleeper laid out across the foreground.

Why

Rubens painted his own version of Titian’s Bacchanal of the Andrians in the 1630s; it hangs in Nationalmuseum, Stockholm.

Notice

Set it beside Titian’s: the same pose for the sleeper, warmer flesh, a busier sky.

“Painters toast each other across a century with the same cup.”
