The Feast of Venus

A goddess’s festival with satyrs, nymphs and a cloud of cupids.

What

Dancers and satyrs whirl around a statue of Venus in a garden, cupids flying above and crowding the ground below.

Why

Rubens took his cue from Titian’s Worship of Venus; the canvas belongs to the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.

Notice

The statue is the still point; everything else in the garden is spinning toward it.

“Rubens painted a feast the way he painted everything: at full volume.”
