Bacchanal

Poussin’s early revel, crowded to the edges and dark with wine.

What

A tangle of satyrs, nymphs and putti fills the field, with a chariot and horses at the right and a figure flying overhead.

Why

Painted in Rome around 1624; the Museo del Prado records it as Bacchanal, or Bacchus and Ariadne (P02312).

Notice

Find the floating figure in the sky, clear of the crowd pressed below.

“The young Poussin let the revel run before he learned to order it.”
