Bacchanal with a Wine Vat

Bacchus steady with his horn of plenty, the mortals reeling around him.

What

Bacchus stands with his cornucopia beside a wine vat while the figures around him stagger, climb and sleep it off.

Why

Engraved in the 1470s, when Mantegna was among the first in Italy to make engravings; the Cleveland Museum of Art holds it (1926.260), CC0.

Notice

A sleeper lies curled at the foot of the vat while a satyr hauls a man up onto it.

“The god holds his wine; his guests do not.”
