Bacchanal with Silenus

Silenus, crowned and soaked, carried along by the revel.

What

A crowned Silenus, saturated with drink, is borne along by satyrs and companions in a frieze of nude figures against a vine.

Why

Cleveland’s record suggests Mantegna conceived it as the right half of his Bacchanal with a Wine Vat; the museum holds this 1481 engraving (1924.223), CC0.

Notice

The figures stand on one shallow ledge, the way they would on a carved Roman coffin.

“One of the first engravings made in Italy was a party.”
