Bacchanal (drawing)

Putti and goats at the vat, in brown ink.

What

Children and goats crowd around an altar laid with fruit, drawn in pen and brown ink with brown wash over faint black chalk.

Why

The Metropolitan Museum of Art holds the sheet (1998.225) and releases it CC0; Poussin drew it about 1635 to 1636.

Notice

The wash puddles in the shadows of the goats; the rest is line and bare paper.

“The revel starts young in Poussin’s world.”
