A Faun Grasping a Bunch of Grapes

A goat-legged faun squeezing grapes in black chalk.

What

A muscular goat-legged faun crouches and grips a bunch of grapes in both hands, drawn in black chalk with brown wash.

Why

Cleveland relates it to a lost Rubens painting of a faun squeezing grapes for the young Bacchus; it holds the sheet (1943.341), CC0.

Notice

Rubens added the brown wash to deepen the shadow behind the figure.

“The press before there was a press: a pair of hands and a bunch of grapes.”
